Given that they left them for you to do, they were either bluffing about Timmo's price, or trying to use it to get a discount.

If they'd taken them away I'd be more concerned, as it is, you're obviously offering something to them that's worth the extra £3.

Oh, and I have a rule of thumb that if nobody ever complains about the price, then you're clearly not charging enough. You get to know those customers that you can use as a pricing benchmark, and if they say nothing, time for a rise!

depends who is behind the counter and the condition of the shoes. they may have done a deal on 2 pairs. most likely, the lady hasn't had any done in the past couple of years and as usual for customers, expects there to have been no price increase.

i get told all the time about how keys are £1.50 in London whilst handing me over £5.50 each.

my local timpsons prices vary considerably. Had 2 customers this week. 1 guy quoted £85 for leather soles & heels ????? & i quoted another chap £35 for leather soles & heels & he went to timpsons for a quote & they said £38 for leather half soles & get the heels free ??????? He promptly returned !

85 quid would have been a quote for re-welt, and JR thru sole with indiana heel. 38 would have been half sole in standard leather. Timpson have guides for pricing, but the manager is in control of the shop and can run it as if it were their own business. If they want to charge more or less it is up to them.

untill their area manager complains that even though they are up on last year, have done a shop record week, that the average price was under £10 as happened to a guy i play golf with

Off of the subject slightly, my brother has been looking for a full time job & has applied for loads with no success, ! As i don't need anyone full time i told him to apply for a job at Timpsons & he got 1. So fair play to Timpsons. At least i havn't got to worry about him being a better repairer than me ! & i'll get inside info. Everyones a winner !

I currently work for Timpson but am looking into going independant. The price on the Timpson price list for ladies stick-on-soles and heels is £15.95, which is consistent across the country. But as has been mentioned by several people at this stage, it is the manager's digression what prices to charge. Every Timpson branch I know of around my area (including my own) charges £17.95, so no it is not expensive.

Also, even if you are charging £3 more than your local Timpson, most employees in the company are too lazy or too focussed on speed to give a half-decent job...so you have nothing to worry about.

That's not 100% correct m8. I worked off and on for Timpsons over 10 years all over the country

The lads in London locations do a rush job because they are so busy, it is not because they don't have pride in their work, it is because they physically cannot get through the work that comes in and the pressure of working for Timpsons means they have to churn out sh1t from time to get through all of the jobs, with regards to the rest of the country I agree it is mainly laziness, (I'm a Yorkshireman by the way defending the Cockneys here)

Timpsons have several price structures according to shop location the price guides are not consistent across the country

Central London shops (the ones in tube and train stations) charge more for everything, as do shops in high profile places Meadowhall, Bluewater, Manchester Trafford centre, Milton Keynes. Southern shops also charge considerably more than most Northern shops basically because of the north/south money divide.

Selfridges in London live on another planet they regularly get £150 plus for a watch battery and pressure test yes you herd me right £150 for a COST PRICE battery !. Regularly over £22 for ladies SAS. I can't even guess what they are charging in Selfridges now for engraving but when I was managing the place we used to charge £14.95 set up charge with the first 10 letters and then 85p per letter after that !

Whilst it is true the managers can charge what they want there are several price "guides" these guides vary considerably

I could tell you all a few stories about Selfridges prices AND CUSTOMERS (particularly with watches and engravaing) but you just would not believe me

I am so glad that madness is behind me

Fair play. I'm just going on my own experiences and they guys I've spoken to. I'll just be glad when I get out of there and don't have to keep the Timpsons happy. On my area the training isn't very good, im just glad I was trained by an independent (my brother, incidently) with much higher standards :)

sorry mrkeys but being rushed of your feet or to busy is not an acceptable reason for charging high prices fr a porly turned out repair and i doubt very much if timpsons top brass would find it acceptable either if the customer complained to the head office. i for one would not employ anyone with that attitude,

You're dead right. John and James Timpson expect the high standards we all should; and quite rightly so. I mean, maybe I was a little over-generalising in my earlier comments, but in such a large company, the standards do vary a fair bit. I've seen some very good Timpson repairs and equally terrible repairs.

the trouble with shops like selfridges is that if they don't charge enough, some of the customers will walk away thinking they will get a crap job. Sometimes you have to put a premium on things to give the impression of a better product.

In an ideal world yes I completely agree

I was just pointing out why it happened

A typical 2 man shop of Timpson's in central London turn over on average £1200-£1500 every single day. And they are always 2 man shops. That should give you some idea of the impossible task that these lads face every day

The only other alternative is to turn the work away - which gets you a written warning at best or at worst is gross missconduct and you get the immediate boot.

Anyway I better stop divulging these things, although all this info is already in the public domain and most of us know someone that has worked these hell holes of blood, sweat and tears, I'm not sure they would appreciate me pointing out what a gold mine a central london location can be if you can secure the right one.
