Which Glue

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I'm having trouble sticking soles to a pair of "Josef Seible" "european comfort shoe"

It seems like a very waxy PVC with bits of cork embedded in it

I have tried stick tests with both yellow and green rehgol primer and no primer at all with bostik 5050

Never had fun like this, trying to stick something in 20 years

Any ideas

Thanks

Tommy

I'm afraid that for this particular pair of shoes that 50/50 and Renia Rehagol are barely holding the sole on and a weak tug and it is clean off so Lee must be on to something.

Before now I have never needed any more than 6092, 5055, green and yellow Renia primers, Now I am half wat through reading the other thread but can anyone tell me the best

way to identify thermoplastic? The only thing I can think of with these shoes is that when grinding away from the wheel it still seems to smeer itself back into the sole if that makes sense

(like you would expect it to do if you ground down with the wheel rather than away from)

Cheers

Tommy

I only use 5050 on pvc.

I did a pair of these last week and yellow rehagol and 6092, no problems

Prime soles, leave for 5 mins. coat shoes and soles with 6092, leave for 5-10mins, heat soles as normal then put shoes under for 5-10 secs but keep them moving and press as normal.

Seems to work for me. :D

TR can be identified like this, both PVC & TR reflect light on the surface after preperation (rather than matt like rubber) to identify which you have, use Renia deSohl (kumzoff) & flex the sole or ideally those little squares that appear in the heels, leave a little showing & then dribble a small amount of deSohl on an area, flexed sole or give the square a bit of pressure, if it melts its TR if the solvent stripper runs off its PVC. but either way you can use the same cleaner to prep the surface as per Elfmans Suggestion, I used this method for quite a while before remembering to order some primer!

Also TR scours like little bits and sticks all over your face. :)

FACE, ARMS, JUMPERS, MACHINE & BACK OF THE BANDS, get it right mate & before Keith chips in about his latest machine sucking the debris away, thats just bollocks & he knows it is when it comes to TR.

I always leave tr primer for at least 15 mins,as it says on the bottle then coat with 50/50,never had a problem. Wouldn't have thought using a neoprene on tr would work but then I've never tried it. You can guarantee while your scouring tr and you're covered head to toe in the stuff someone comes in for watch battery ,out comes the hoover with brush attachment(don't get to excited you guys from the valleys, stick to sheep,I know they can nip but that's half the fun so I've been told)

For the record, the problem with TR is that it becomes highly electro-static once scoured, therefore it will stick to the first thing that earths it! For example, hands, arms, machine, etc

TR has a habit of clogging the bands which is the most annoying thing, but there is something you can do that helps, make sure you have a nice NEW band on so it cuts the TR rather than grind, this way it doesn't create the heat that makes it worse

  • 1 month later...

I am having a nightmare with these shoes still. I bought some cumzoff from Birch's and used it as per Elfman's instuctions (there is no residue to brush off on these shoes) and the suff comes clean off easily. I have tried every permitation to no avail. I have done stick tests with cumzoff with and without primer (green and yellow) 50/50 and 6092 with rubber and plastic (also tried a old tin of Megabond I found in the shop).

I have on its way a tin of syntic total and would appreciate advice on use (ie minimum heat and use of primers)

Also, having emailed the shoe manufacturers I received a phone call today from them. They said the shoes are sold as eco friendly from recycled thermo rubber (not sure they are rubber, it looks and acts like plastic but just will not let the glue work) and do not advise customers to have these resoled (now they tell me) as nothing they know of will stick to them ( they are stitched to the upper)

Here is a link to a similar pair - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Josef-Seibel- ... 45fd894b3d

Regards
