Gingerbas
Hi, does anyone have a breakdown on what they charge for leathergood repairs. ie:- zips, rivets , stitch per inch. That type of thing. Have been asked by a local retail shop to do repairs on customers goods. It's been a while since I charged for this type of work having been employed with the NHS. If anyone can help. Most of there handbags start in the region £100 and up.
Lee
for stitching I charge 5.00 for the first run, then 1.00 extra per cast off, so if a handbag needs a handle stitched i'd charge 5.00 if it needed all 4 handles stitched it would be 8.00 anything involving a bit of leather is a few pounds more. Zips from 25.00 upwards rivets 4.00 each. Anything that involves hand stitching & not a sawing machine 8.00 upwards. * And my Leather works coming along! thanks for the inspiring conversation at the exhibition! * Lee

Guest lee.
These jobs can be a nightmare to price , it all depends on what the customer thinks the job is worth in relation to the value of the item , sadly the bulk of what we get in are repairs to low end items from Shoezone and Primark so are prices have to be keen ( and we still get people walking away shaking there heads ) bearing in mind that its not always this job , but the next they may bring in ,be it a key or a pair of heels . We often hear the story that they have tried everywhere else and we are the there last hope , we reply saying they should have come to us first and then they would not have wasted time elswhere. So we charge 50p for a rivet , £1 to replace a buckle ( supplied by us) , Elastics £2 each or £3 the pair , same for Velcro , Press Studs £1 each , restitch Bag handle £1 ( or £3 for all 4 points) , new hanging tabs for bag strap ( in Leather ) £2 single or £3 the pair, hand sewing those nasty Moccasins £2 - £3 depending on how much needed , extend sandal straps in Leather £3 each or £5 the pair , new Zip slider £3 , Holes in Belts or Sandal Straps - No Charge ! . Our Customers still think we are making a fortune out of these jobs , we do these as more of a service than a profit generator, but they still put an extra £50 a week in the till. Guest lee.
Some of our customers think they are ridiculous as well , but not in the same sense as you , you know the sort - "we only paid £5/£10 for the bag/shoes", in some less well off areas its hard to trade ( we are looking at moving ,after the shop being in the same place for 25 yrs). The likes of Asda ,Tesco etc starting to sell bags and shoes , on top of the cheap end shops are not helping us at all when it comes to these type of jobs , many just throw them away , some will at least try to get them fixed , our nearest independant charges 4 time what we do , we know this because the people that bring the jobs to us tell us , and more often than not start to bring the other jobs ( Shoes/Keys) to us . A "well known" multiple is said ( by a good friend who works there) to base the costs of all of these jobs at £1 per minute with a minimum harge of £5 , more often than not turning them away because they either do not have the skills ,tools , or bits to do them, how many times do you get - "the other man sad he would do it if i got the Zip/Buckle/Velcro/Elastic for him ". Most of these jobs are second nature to me , we manufacture items as well ( in another Buisness ) so have all the tools ,machines , and fittings anyway , must get round to putting some mixed sets of "hard to find" fittings on eBay and linking in the "For Sale" section ( with a donation to the Forum Charity of course ) . And by the way we still lose heels to the nice man in B'Ham City Centre who charges £2.50 a pair for Ladies , seems at £4 (any Size /Type) we are overcharging !
