Gray
Big thanks to Mark from Umarq for delivering my new machine yesterday.(I know you're watching LOL) I'm getting to grips with it fairly quickly. The Vistool 8 software is a big step up on the Vistool 6 software I was using and the machine is superb. Can't think why I waited so long before upgrading. Highly recommended. Anyone thinking of a new computerised engraving machine, these guys are worth a look.
Michael
What differences between vistool 6 and 8? I must upgrade
Gray
To many to list mate. Biggest thing i was impressed with was the depth profile. Also no need to go into into transform to stretch text etc. Download the new software from Umarq and have a fiddle.
Gray
Demo mode only though. I'm no spring chicken and not the greatest of computer literate users but even I can find Vistool software easy too use.
Michael
What does the depth profile function do? I read it was being added but couldn't find what it actually does. Does 8 have a " V carve " function like in the slate house numbers?
Gray
I knew you would ask that you sod LOL. Bearing in mind i only got it yesterday i'll try and explain the best I can, here goes. Say for example you have a Georgian tankard set up. You can mark points along the length of the tankard, as many as you like and when you engrave it the profile of the tankard will be followed so the depth of the engraving is even all the way down. Best I can do for now Michael maybe StevenB may be able to elaborate more. But its a cool feature none the less. Especially when as Mark demonstrated it with the diamond above the engraving area and it followed the contours. Don't think it has v carve http://www.u-marq.com/user_downloads/user_downloads.php
StevenB
That's not a bad description really. =D> You can use depth profiling to set a variable 'Z' depth reference in either the Left - Right or Front - Back directions. You do this by lowering the cutter to the surface at a number of points along the axis to form the shape required. I generally do it at 10mm intervals, though the radius of the item will dictate this. As previously mentioned this is ideal for items such as a georgian tankard, or a hip flask (particularly in combination with the narrow point diamond recommended here: http://www.shoerepairer.info/bb3/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5754 It's even useful for flat items that you can't, or perhaps don't want to get level in the vice, for whatever reason. You just set each end & it will follow the angle. The one thing it can't do at the moment is follow a profile in both the L-R & F-B directions, perhaps a feature for v9? And I'm not aware of a V-Carve function, maybe this will be in v9 too?
Michael
Quick Question?: When using the depth profile function do you need to set the retract to greater than the highest point of the object being engraved, or does this do away with the need to change the retract distance?
StevenB
It does away with the need to set a large retract. If it is set to (for example) 2mm retract, it will follow this 2mm along the profile that you have set.
Gray
I concur. I foresee many more questions coming from young Michael. Be careful when setting it though make sure you Z up between each point. Check out the measure plate function. I love that
Michael
May not be too many questions. I managed to install software and update drivers for controller in about 25 minutes without calling U-Marq, Mark Chadwick or the people in Denmark who wrote the drivers.... I moved all my old jobs from my old laptop onto the new one as well as my bookmarks and e-mails that the man in the computer repair shop didn't know how to do!! StevenB
Check out the measure plate function. I love that Steven raises one eyebrow in a quizzical fashion. What is this measure plate function that you refer to... pootles off to engraving machine to have a look... opens auto layout, there is the mystical [measure...] button. Clicks on it expecting something groundbreaking... and, oh it's what I know as [shift]+[Alt]+[3]. Don't you just love a good keyboard shortcut \:D/
Gray
lol........... I just love it for when you get those tooth box, or first hair, or picture frame things... move the tool to one corner..move the tool to the opposite corner...and there it is in the perfect position for you to enter your text. I love it
