x minit uk
I have been doing a few re-welt jobs lately and have noticed the demise in quality of the wax twin threads. You can only get the 6 guage threads now and they are just not up to scratch in my opinion. So I was wondering if anyone had some old 8 guage stashed away in a box or something. Cheers for any help. Ps, no I am not going to make my own.
elfman
whats the problem with the wax twin uk ,is it snapping on you ,if so slacken of sligthly .any thread will snap if you pull to tight against itself .this was a tip i learnt in the navy .if you have a supposedly unbreable twin and no knife to cut it then you can cut it using its own strength as a knife
x minit uk
No it does'nt always snap, sometimes it freys so badly I have to tie it off and start with a fresh one. Also the bristles are very weak and bend way to easy, and break.
elfman
right not much you can do about the britles .but try this for the fraying . whilst it is still in its individual wrapper set light to the wrapper to warm up the wax and then retwist between fingers and leave to cool before using

Guest Whiteboot
Here`s a little tip if the wire in the bristles comes astray & makes it difficult to feed through the hole made by awl. Push through the good bristle until you have the waxed thread & no bristle, then with the awl gently make a hole through the middle of the thread you pulled through & put the dodgey bristle into the hole in thread & close the wax thread around the bristle. you can now carefully pull the thread back through so the bit of wire is not snagging. pull the bristle from the thread & then pull & tension as normal. This works even if both bristle play up as you can still feed the first bristle through but not the second as there is no room past the first thread. I was taught this by a shoe maker who couldn`t stand the swearing anymore. Will try to post some photos as my explaination is not the best.
