Lee Fast speed =heat Fast + pressure =more heat Fast+pressure+ blunt drill=disaster. Slow speed.. Minimum pressure... Sharp Bit=minimal heat. Water or watever lubricant/coolant you choose to use is too late, the damage can already have been done. The solution to the problem is not to have to cool it down in the 1st place. Idealy 1 person drills with another person drip feeding cutting lubricant onto the bottom of the drill bit with a mini/micro oiler of the type used for clocks.(but hey, who has that amount of time and spare staff). In engineering as a rule of thumb, the smaller the drill the higher the speed, having the correct faster speed reduces friction, giving less heat. Recommended Twist drill speeds (into steel) 1/16†- 3/16†3000rpm 1/4†- 3/8†1000rpm 7/16†- 5/8†600rpm 11/16†- 1†350rpm Its always the bigger the drill the slower the speed not the other way round. small drill + slow speed = friction / higher heat Lee Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Never knew about the speeds for different sizes Lee. Yer learn something new every day. My references are for drills around the 1/2" size. Never had the oportunity to use a slow speed on stilettos, the drills then were one speed only. There must be an agent in the UK for these, have you emailed Gucci? hi hugh, i'm back and with my dummy firmly stuffed in my big gob for the moment, to be truthful i was a man down last week and had to work 6 days flat out and was too knackered to be bothered with this there intraweb... i have a place to send the gucci's to, recommended by a kind member of this forum by PM. my customer is perfectly happy for me to deal with the problem after the new year as i don't want the problems or stress of things going missing the the very busy xmas post. thanks to the people who helped me with this minor problem and to the boo boys.... At least you have had the gumption to sourse an answer to the problem. Fair play to you for that. elfman Posted December 24, 2008 Report Share Posted December 24, 2008 i have read this thread more times than i care to count nd i still come to the same conclusion and that is ,no matter which way you cut it the responsabilty is yours and the folling reasons are what i base my conclusions on. if acustomer brings in a pair of shoes for repair the fist thing you should do is examine them for any pitfalls that may arise this includes worn down pins .split heel blocks, thin heel walls and if you find any of these hen you point it out to your customer and explain what the pitfalls are and that you will make every effort to avoid any any damage . this rule applies to all shoes regardless of the value of the shoes be it £25 or £325. secondly if a pair of shoes happen to miss this inspection then it is still your responsabilty to insure that no damage is done to the shoe in every stage of repair, i have on a number of occasions come across this myself and the first thing i do is stop working on the shoes then put them to one side untill he customer returns and explained the problem and told them that they can still be repaired but it is not at the same price becouse it going to involve a bit more time and work to do them 99% of the time they will thankyou and accept the price and walk out smilling knowing there shoes are in good hands now for my final rant ,i have trained up a few peaple from scratch and also employed experienced shoe repairers and also trained shoemakers in repairs but no matter what experience they had they all got the same pep talk which goes as follows if you make amess of apair of shoes tell meand i will rectifie them and show you where you went wrong so that it doesnt happen again and that will be the end of the matter but if youmess up a pair and dont tell me then standby for the biggest askicking and the cost of the rectifecation comes out of your pocket not mine Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
