elfman
sorry hugh but i just can not agree with that shout ,although i have not made this statement when asked if they are worth repairing. my stock answer is allways , i cannot answer that however i can repair them and i will quote you a price and then you can decide if they are worth it the only exception to this rule is on the surgical repairs simply becouse by the time you have added the codes for the repair then they could get new boots or shoes made up cheaper thus saving the tax payer quite a few bob,
gav
sorry Hugh but i dont agree with your shout either. We always give our professional opinion if shoes are worth repairing or not , if the repair is going to cost more than a new pair of the same quality then there not worth doing. We find that our customers appreciate an honest assment of the job. But at the end of the day its there choice.

Lee
TRADESFOLK WHO TELL CUSTOMERS THAT THEIR SHOES ARE NOT WORTH REPAIRING SHOULD BE SHOT TWICE I agree, however there might be some other reason that makes them not worth repairing! My quote for say a pair of soles & heels, might fall favourably to the customer. I give the price & they agree. However whilst looking over the shoes, I notice something which is “close†to failing. Perhaps a repair might be needed very soon, which would cost substantially more than the soles & heels. I WOULD mention this & may observe the shoes are not worth repairing at this late stage in there life span…………… if the repair is going to cost more than a new pair of the same quality then there not worth doing. I Disagree! Classic example. Samuel Windsors, I am repairing 2 pairs this week, for substantially more than they cost to replace, why? Because they are comfortable………… Its up to the customer only to decide weather shoes are worth repairing... However it should be up to YOU to be professional enough to offer favourable advice based on the work & footwear presented to you.......... THE ORIGINAL SHOUT! Customers who say HOW CHEAP CAN YOU DO... Should be shot I hate bartering how much for two, do you do a discount etc etc. I agree with YOU Danny HOWEVER! I condone GUN crime, in the UK its illegal to go around shooting people. Those who give ill-suiting advice to there customers should be kicked in the Nuts! elfman
on 2 occasions this week custmers have replied no its not worth it / here is one example my doughter has a pair of sandels and the sole has come off one of them could you fix them for her certainly madam no problem has she gotthe sole no she lost it ah that means she will need a long sole on them and it would be best to do both of them to make them match ok how much will that be (now here is where uk may lol again ) about £ 8.50 madam ,oh no its not worth it they only cost £5 , now depending on where abouts in the country you are established telling custermers that they are not worth repairing is alot better than haveing them leaving thinking that you have tried to rip them off aand then telling all and sundry that you are a ripoff merchant as they call it around these parts even though you have quoted a fair price
Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
YOU... do not have the jurisdiction to play God with customers belongings no matter what the situation. THEY.. and only they, decide if the shoes are worth repairing. THEY have brought them to you the person that they believe to be the person who can give their treasured shoes extra life. Who in their right mind is going to waste time effort and money getting shoes to you if they do not want to spend money on them? YOU as the technician can give them several options as to which path is the most favourable one to go down, they then make the decision..... not YOU. GOD forbid anyone who ever tells me that something(no matter what) is not worth repairing after I've made the effort to take it to them. If YOU say that they are not worth repairing it is on one of three counts. 1. You dont want the hassle that you know is involved. 2. You dont think the customer will be prepared to spend what you estimate the cost to be. 3. You are not capable of doing the job to a satisfactory and guaranteed standard. Not worth repairing is not in my verbal dictionary. ANYONE..who dissagrees is in need of re-training on Customer Service, that is if they had any in the first place. Now you've got me really wound up, where's the Bats Blood and Toads Knackers, must make a potion before I cast a spell upon you missguided poor souls I cant believe that anyone would put themselves up for battering from Hugh & Planet

elfman
ok hugh and planet i have battered scotch rump steak harder than you have battered this topic , i also agree with hughs three points although points 1 and three are out point two is valid ,now if you go back and read my origanal post you will see that i have never given that as an answer to anyone it says and i repeat " i wiil not tell you if they are beyound repair or they are not worth repairing any shoe can be repaired i will quote you a price and you can decide if they are woth repairing " the reason i disagreed with hughs shout was like you two i know there are peaple in the trade that say this as well as other misleading information instead of admitting that they cannot do it and pointing them in the direction of someone who can ,example in 1974 i walked into a local TIMPSONS and asked if they would put a pair of fussells 1/4 steel combinettes on my heels and was told sorry mate that cant be done becouse your heels are pvc and nothing will stick them. now before you say that if you admit that to a customer and point him in the right diriction you could lose him as a customer then the same thing could happen if you tell them they are not worth repairing or that they cant be done and then they find someone who can as happened yesterday when a lady came in and asked how much for ladies heels and how long will it take i said £3.50 about 5mins so she pulled a pair out of her bag and asked me to do them then proceeded to pull out a second pair and said can you do these as well becouse the man across the road said they cant be done becouse the heels are the wrong shape and style i.e wedge shoes about 4inch with 1/2 inch top peice so i said no problem same price and time to which she replied ok do them and i know were to come in future i wont go to him again as hes such a happy chap ( i have sometimes sent customers to him if i have run short on some keys but have warned them that if he is haveing a smoke or his breakfast or reading his paper do not disturb him he will not be pleased if you do ) finally hugh and planet not agreeing with your shouts is my opinion as it is yours to say what you did niether is right or wrong they are just that an opinion and we are all entitled to our own

Lee
YOU... do not have the jurisdiction to play God with customers belongings no matter what the situation. A bit extreme! I cast thunder down on you THEY have brought them to you the person that they believe to be the person who can give their treasured shoes extra life Not 100% true in a lot of cases, my customers come to me, because they know I am not “bonus†driven. They know I will give them an honest opinion on the state of the shoes, they know I will quote a price & “if†I see something which I feel would make them become an uneconomical repair I would tell them. Then leave the disition to them. GOD forbid anyone who ever tells me that something(no matter what) is not worth repairing after I've made the effort to take it to them. God forbid, anyone who repairs your shoes only for that upper to split across the toes, because they where after your money. OR that childrens shoe that you take for repair only to find that he hadn’t been entirely honest about the condition of the eyelet hold, despite spotting them. Not worth repairing is not in my verbal dictionary. Not worth repairing IS in my verbal dictionary although I wouldn’t say this directly but as previously said, would give the customer an honest view as to the condition of the shoes. ANYONE..who dissagrees is in need of re-training on Customer Service, that is if they had any in the first place. ANYONE.. Who disagrees is in need of “real†training not on Customer Service, But customer Respect & business reputation skills. DO NOT SCREW your customers, just for turnover alone. Build their trust & loyalty. Lee

ironplanet uk900
"Yes Madame, We can re-build your shoes, There is a lot of time and work involved, But the end result will be excellent. The cost would be £40" 1. (Customer) "ok, Thanks I'll have them gone, they are my favourite shoes" 2. (Customer) "Ok, Thanks for the quote, But I think I'll leave it, I didn't want to spend that much" Another Scenario 1. (customer) "Could you repair my shoes, I know I've let them go a little far, but they're my favourite shoes" Repairer, "No love they're not worth repairing" OR "No it would cost more than the shoes are worth" I know what I would prefere to hear. Being professional doesn't mean you try to make the desission for your customer, its telling the customer what you would need to do to get the shoes back to a state were you can give a guarentee for the repair, Thats real professionalism, and that way your more likely to get the job. Not sending your customer away feeling embarassed, after all they took the time to bring the shoes in in the first place. Explain the job in a professional manner and you gain respect from the customer, and they are more likely to bring other repairs in even if they don't have the job done that day. Theres a mentality with some repairers that they pick and choose there work because they are busy enough anyway, they don't want the jobs that tax there decaying brains....send em to me I say
