kobblers
some pillock at our local council has hired a gate fitter from a different city to fit alley gates on some of the estates round here. what's he done? used his own security blanks for the locks which the council don't stock or supply for extra copies for the tenants and we can't copy either so no-one can get new keys despite the fact the council sent a letter out saying that the keys don't nbeed permission to be copied and are easily available at most key cutters.. i phoned the number up on one of the keys and they said if i fax them copies of some of the blanks (there's a few different sorts) then they may sell us some for our use but most of their blanks they don't give out. they haven't replied to my fax anyway how the hell are people meant to get copies the council should've ensured that the keys for the locks that were being put on the gates were readily available for those who need them. or at the very least they coulda used a local firm who were within easy reach for people to go to for keys. rick. Technical Tony original
Best reply here I think Now SKS have this machine we will copy all NON restricted keys, this is when in some cases we can just not find a key for the job !..... If someone asks us to copy a restricted section we (SKS) will say no ... If someone else has a machine like this - it is up to them how they use it ! ponsaloti
Technical john, can you say how many keys per year you get sent that you dont have a blank for (obviously, as you`ve stated non-restricted), and how long will it take the machine to pay for itself. Also have you any idea what locksmiths think about these machines, more-so the onse that have bought restricted sections from your-selves.
Technical Tony original
Hi - We have only had ours for about 3 weeks and cut about 15 keys now. We are just about to advertise this to our customers so should hopefully see an increase from this. One main reason we looked at this was for the good old Union keys - that have run out of copyright (EG 1989 keys with square heads) we have ordered in around 100 - 200 of these direct from union in the last year - and this is just for the people who would wait the 4 - 6 weeks delivery service from them (Union do say 1-2 weeks - but I have never received anything quicker than 4 weeks !) . there are alot more customers that said sorry No this is to long to wait ! - So we are hopeing to have a turn around of these keys from 6 weeks to aprox 3 - 4 days !, and this is only 1 type of key. We will need to cut alot of keys to cover the costs for ourselves - but we have looked at this as an extra service -(This may take us months or years - but our aim is to help out everyone with more to offer!) Restricted keys - If some one is caught copying these it is not fair at all to every one in the circle of the sale EG - The W/sale company / Trade shop / End customer - I have heard of people who have cut restricted keys and they have been taken to court and fined If the key is restricted stay away from it - If someone copies a restricted key - they will upset everyone (this would Inclund SKS if it was a copy of a restricted section we have sold, is made!) If you have a machine like this - Please treat the use of the machine to be Legal and fair - and not upset anyone else in the trade. Note - If it is a section EG Old security key that is not maintained any more (As Union Example above) - that is fine and should help everyone out in the circle of trade to end customer . I hope this has helped you out . And I hope I have not missed any of your question -
ponsaloti
Personally I think these machines can do alot of damage to trading locksmiths and my own view is sks and other suppliers shouldnt be selling them, will all know restricted keys are going to be cut on these machines by unathorised people. Sorry john, but it dosnt seem right to me.
Technical Tony original
Hi - I do understand 100% I have only offered help to obtain a machine (as above) - But we are not trying to sell them - we have purchased one for ourselves - and do not want to upset our customers - for the sake of obtaining a few keys - EG - Going back to restricted - no way will we copy these - But I know what you are saying - If someone else buys a machine like these - Will they copy keys that are restricted and will they sleep at night I know SKS will sleep well because we will not copy restriced sections - and really this is my advise to everyone else who owns a machine like this.
