In response to the various emails going around the shoe repair forum I thought it would be helpful to set the record straight from our point of view!?

1. The issue of price matching in Rugby - Since a competitor opened up 4 doors away in Rugby we have been losing turnover and consequently have reduced the staffing levels. The area manager decided to do a “price match promiseâ€Â

they have been there 20 years ive been there almost 3 years never had to undercut them as an independent have always been cheaper but never on the quality, this is the only shop i know of that they have the offer on with,

There is always two sides to the storey, Mark didn't mention he'd opened up almost next door to Timpsons :?

I must say Mark, you opened up in competition with Timpsons, So it looks like your getting competition. You can't expect them to let you trample all over them.

Opening up next door to anyone in the same trade is asking for trouble.

Just my thoughts though.

I can't comment on the other points as I wasn't aware of them.

Sad story, but i must say that if someone opens up 4 doors away i would do anything to get rid of them.... Especially if they are cheaper...sorry Mark

I like the "I'm dearer than you" method, which makes good sense if your using quality materials & workmanship

Hey then you will now be able to say in true Harry Enfield style with full brummy accent " I'm considerably richer than yow " ...

Thanks for your post James.

2. Timpson key cutting is poor -

I couldn’t find a topic where these words are actually printed perhaps you could point me to them & I will delete them. You may be a large enough company to do a survey of “worked first timeâ€Â

Of course I opened up in competition of them they have been there for 25 years what am i supposed to do open a shop when im 10 they have been trading for over 100 years so where does that leave most independents, like I said at the begining the price war does not affect me , what I objected to was the staff saying I will be out by christmas, They dont own the high street nor the shopping centres so I have a right to open where I want, I would not open where another independent is though.

And as Rugby is my home town then I feel I have more right to open there.

As for my shop it took me 7 years to find the right location in Rugby waiting for the right shop to come along yes I could of moved almost out of town but there no footfall there , im not going to invest over 40, 000 in stock and machinery to take 500 aweek am I

I believe an independent has moved nearer to Timpsons in Merryhill even nearer than I am in Rugby and theres no price war there so how does that figure,

James I am open to offers if you would like to buy me out, drop me a line

i think the point is Mark...

you never said you were so close

to them in the first place so everybody

got the wrong idea...(imho)

and the independant in merry hill

has been there all the time,,,just at the

entrance to the market....all he has done is

moved into the isle when the market closed..

its about 20 feet ......

So in reply to your message if the merryhill cobbler was there first why out of all that massive shopping area why did timpsons move so close to him when he was in the market i would say a 2 minute walk was all there was between them, so that dont wash with me, this is now my last entry regards this because i know whats gone on this end, james you do what you need but it seems quality beats price .

Timpson's and independants have been fighting it out for years thats the way it works. My dad left Timpson's to set up in the middle of a timpson triangle in a busy city centre in which all branches were within a couple of minutes walk of each other and he made a good living charging a little less but there was no price wars. Also take a look at Cardiff city centre where you will find a Timpson branch on St Mary's St which has a small newsagent kiosk next door with the indoor market next to that, and guess what the first stall in the market is. Yes you guessed it, it is an independant shoe repairers which charges close to half the price of Timpson's yet both are busy all day every day.

good point 900 no repair shop can be successful without a good repairer. And in St Mary's St the guys a good repairer with the gift of the gab who can sell ice to eskimos while the guy in the market turns out quality work every time, I have sent my missus in with my shoes and I wear them to work daily and i'm happy enough. A very merry christmas to them both!!!! :smt114 :smt111
