Guest Raymate
timpson have come up with a new promotion watch batteries guaranteed for the life of the watch on fitting a battery they giv ecustomers a piece of card with the watch details on it when the battery dies they replace it FOC they charge £9.95 for this service andgiven that the average life of a battery is 2 years how many customers will keep a piece of card for that long also if they do fit a second battery a lot of people change thier watch before it is four years old seams like a clever idea
Lee
This should be given careful consideration, my watch I have had since 1987 ( when I was 18 ) which was long before I even fitted batteries, but its probably had 5 batteries in that time which would have made £25 if the batteries cost even half that offer. So whilst I guarantee all batteries is this likely to be the future? and if so when every one offers life time guarantees on batteries will we have to offer free replacement watches just to keep one step ahead of the competition? Build your reputation and concentrate on good service, quality parts & good presentation. the majority of customers wouldn't actually realise such an offer exists for quite a few years because they will return to you knowing they can trust you. Guest Raymate
Its not an offer we will follow just thought people should be aware ofwhat most independants main competitors are up to
Guest mark
yes iv'e seen this promotion as well, i charge 4.00 and i also give a years gaurentee with all my batteries BUT some people still walk away and say its to dear personally i dont think its a good idea the prices may start at 9.95 but i dont see how you can have two watches which both take a 377 for example 9.995 for the argos watch but more nearer 12.00 if its rotary or higher make , same battery same work involved i personally think its high street robbery and now there doing jewllery repairs in house (good luck with that) john timpson said in the cutting edge that if you rely on shoe repairs and key cutting only "you better look out" or words to that effect i know of some independents who only do shoes and keys No transponders no engraving and no watch repairs and still take more than the timpson shop up the high street and do you know why BECAUSE their prices are in cloud 9 am i alone in this thinking or what. BUT all said and done i do have utmost respect for john timpson only as he worked from the bottom upwards and i admire him for that and its his company at the end of the day like ours is ours. Right im getting of my soap box now
Lee
And if either John or James are in the area, be shore to poop in to Cobb-Lee's. Since I can't actually leave the shop during working hours I'll be sure to buy you both a Chinese from the takeaway next door! And then you can give an "offical response" to your thoughts about the trade. Lee
StevenB
Lee, I hope you have some good carpet cleaner if they do indeed 'poop in' to your fine establishment.
Lee
I am not even going to correct that spelling, your post made me laugh so much. But if you can not laugh at your self and all that! =D> thats why they have made millions and I have made bugger all! Lee
kobblers
personally, i think it'll be a short lived fad and that when it bites them in the backside they'll give it up. but that's just my opinion rick.
Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
I did a similiar think with shoe repairs in the 70s with stilettos, "all Ladies Steel Heels gauranteed for the life of the shoes" at a cost of 4p for the top pieces it did not cost much to replace any, a similiar ratio to the watch battery prices. I would replace about 1 pair per week due to the fact that the guarantee was for wear, not losing them in an escalator etc. No-one else would dare to do it and Igot the greatest part of the trade in Stilettos at that time. Iwould do it again now if I was still operating.
Danny King
Had a customer in this afternoon He had been in the local timpson store to get a watch battery changed. The watch was a standard date and time watch made by Limit with a snap on back. Nothing starnge there you might say.... Afer a long speach by the young man in the shop he was quoted £25.75 for a new battery...... yes £25.75..... I quoted him my normal £4.00 and changed the battery. While I was doing this he asked you do have the battery for this type of watch as he had been told it was a special battery..... not sure when a 377 became a special battery? Scary thought, But I wonder how many people would of said yes to the £25.75 price tag......................
kobblers
i was recently informed by a customer of mine that a well known key cutter near to myself had told him that his car key carried a transponder and then quoted him whatever they charge for that type of key. the guy balked at the price and turned up at ours to see if he could get it at a better price, he got a shock after i told him it was an ordinary, unchipped car key, i asked him if he was certain that they said it was chipped and he said that they'd put it in a reader that told them so don't know if this was just idiocy on the part of the employee but if it wasn't then it's a blatant attempt to con the customer i encouraged him to complain to the head office, whether he will or not is up to him rick. Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
If I could get that for 377 batteries I would only ave to work 1 day a week, worth coming out of retirement for, he he.
derek
unfortunately the few daylight robbers at timpsons make the guys who charge a decent price look bad.i would have charged £5.95 or £8.95 for a lifetime guarentee
Danny King
I think he knew what he was doing and was trying to baffle the customer.......maybe he was low on his bonus this week........
Hugh-Candoit (ENG)
You may be right there. The £££s in the pocket are far more important than the customer for an employee.
derek
he doesn't need to know much about watches when he's got a pricelist telling him how much to charge for that make of watch, and i know that a limit is on the list
james timpson
the lifetime guarantee has been a big success for us. it is a great deal for our customers and is proving a massive win. i found a number of jewellers in the states selling this on a research trip i went on so trialled it in some shops about six months ago. whats more the staff find it easy to sell. james
ironplanet uk900
We also offer this and about 50% of customers go with it. only ever had one customer back. It is a good money spinner
Lee
James How do your guys market this? Do they offer there normal price, then offer the lifetime guarantee? How do you get them to catch the sale? Lee
james timpson
lee exactly as you say. there are two prices for two different "products". the premium amount varies depending on the value of the watch. james
TITs
Hats off to Mr James Timpson for standing up and being heard, He could have came on this form as a guest but decided to put his views where his name is. If only more of our suppliers did the same I have respect for any man who stands up and faces the glare of others
