Your first requirement is to determine whether there's enough business (existing or potential) coming in. Before we bought our machines we determined how much money each machine must earn to cover lease costs, operating costs, maintenance etc... We actually went out and found new customers first, initally using a 3rd party to do the engraving and adding our margins. When we'd secured the customers (most come back for more over time), we invested in machines of our own.
