Would anyone know where I can get this key blank , It's supplied by Codringtons  , It's not restricted or has a patent ,but they only supply one place per county to encourage return work for that locksmith .Unfortunately for them they are getting a lot of complaints made to trading standards because the customer hasn't been informed that they would have to travel 20 miles to get a key cut .I had a chat with trading standards & I said I'll try to source a blank from else where .

  • 2 weeks later...

I've got an account with Codringtons & they have said it doesn't have a legal patent but will only supply another local Locksmith with this key . I've just been asked by trading Standards to confirm that we are unable to get the key .

I'm sure Trading standards will explain manufacturers can choose who they distribute their products to, and the distributor can choose who they want to supply.

A retailer can refuse to serve a consumer if they wish, there's nothing in law stating 'thou must be able to get whatever ye wants from anyone you want' unless it's a regulated market IE energy / water etc

Otherwise it would be pointless in investing £millions in research and manufacture - if anyone could just walk in and copy it for free.

Sometimes the consumer needs to be put back into their box, the law also protects the businesses who invest and make the damn stuff.

I'm not sure you are right. A Key is a spare part, unless protected by a current patent a customer can ask anyone to supply a similar spare part using legally obtained stock, likewise if it is copied in one of those new fangled copy machines it, and even if patented, will probably not infringe that patent.

Many key blanks had their keyheads as a copyright like Mul-T-Lock - the little wangy bit in one of the keys is another, but if you can convert a lolly stick to work the lock you have not infringed the law.

Only if you produce a lookalike keyblank

As far as I can research Federal has no current patents in the UK -  a so called key stamped 'restricted' has no weight in law.

If you can legally obtain keyblanks you may copy them

Errrrm you need to take a legal chill pill Mick - if you want to explore patent laws feel free, but I'm not a 'free' resource on 'why can't I have my cake and eat it'

Why do you think we cut Ultion keys for less than anyone else? No legal protection and Steve and I have had a 'tiff' so ends that story.

You can copy the non patented blank - just buy the machine to do it, INVEST your cash just like the manufacturer (£2m tooling and plant) and distributor (taking £100K+ stock)

No one is stopping you - so stop moaning? Buy it or don't buy it.

I'm not moaning you dik, I was just correcting your mis-information yet again, Oh God of all he surveys. I do not need your services EVER - as for a chill pill I have forgotten more than you will ever know as for the £2m tooling on what planet is that? and £100K stock SKS do not have that much key stock - as I said DIK

Of course I think of you - when I drive home with the roof down, spanking the V8. I do worry about that potential 'Mick Friend' not spending £20 a week with me....as the wind blows through my hair, but it's a very brief moment I can assure you.

Never mind one day you will be able to afford a car with a roof, and as for what your doing in your lap while driving (although strange name for it V8) as for your hair hopefully the glue will not give up as you pass a bus,

I do think of you every time I read the press about cowboys, maybe one day I will be called as an expert witness for the prosecution before your enforced holiday?

Off you go and buy 3 more key cutting machines and two containers of cylinders for all the customers you service on your trade bike

Why are you on this forum, Lock & Key? It seems to me that all you aim to do is rile people who I deeply respect and boast about how good you are, how much money you've got or what you know.

I've spent the past two days going through your posts and you rarely contribute anything of value to the forum and yet you post a link to your website so people can spend money with you - this forum wasn't set up for people to just take, take, take and not give anything back.

Might I suggest that you join a different forum where they are willing to put up with your arrogance? (This is my own personal opinion and not because I am a Mod)

Rick I wonder if you are just a sad re-seller of sycophant behaviour - and you want to ask your sycophants to wonder why I'm here as I clearly challenge you, in your bubble.

I like to enable people to have their own opinion, rather than follow the 'known path' taught to us by our fathers who where also lemmings.

Forgot to add 5R23 blanks - we have approx 200 5R23 blanks here. Not for sale, as we are not lemmings.

I'm sure Rick, Mick, Billy Bobby, Jimmy, John Boy and Sammy can sort them for you. They are the masters of the talk?

Sad re-seller of sycophant behaviour? (sic). Ah, the good ole ad-hominem approach. Plain English, please, as that doesn't even make sense...........How long did it take to come up with that incogent gem?

You don't like anyone to have an opinion that's different to yours, as evidenced by your posts and you certainly don't challenge me as I don't see your arrogance as a threat - more of a stain on what is predominantly a peaceful and happy forum.

Your father may have been a lemming but mine certainly wasn't although I'm not exactly sure how that's relevant.........

"Just had 1,200 348E blanks delivered on Friday - but none for you, sorry." http://shoerepairer.info/topic/21707-mul-t-lock-blanks/

"Forgot to add 5R23 blanks - we have approx 200 5R23 blanks here. Not for sale, as we are not lemmings". (What's that funny, bovine smell?)

Those quotes of yours sum up your approach to the good people of this forum - it proves my point, exactly - hoist by your own petard springs to mind ;)

Are you not going to take my suggestion? After all, you don't even want to be here and most of us would probably be quite happy if you take your insufferable behaviour elsewhere: "Just email me at work as I'm rather fed up with this forum!" (Your words, remember?)

Carry on with your personal, sly digs and I may just hasten your timely demise from this forum, for you. (You may want to take a quick peek at the Terms & Conditions of this forum: section 6, subsections 6.2.2 - 6.2.3 and 6.2.4 and educate yourself on what is deemed as acceptable behaviour)

;)

Hi everyone. We want everyone to openly share opinions, ideas and ask for advice in an open and friendly environment, and will not stand for members trying to make other members feel small and put them down. We have previously warned one member about their behaviour, and they have clearly ignored this. As such, we have now banned this member from the forum.

We hope the rest of you will continue to treat this forum with respect as you have been doing, and see the forum as the valuable resource which it is.

We hope you all have a great day :)

All the above comments seemed to have missed the point . you shouldn't fit a restricted lock with out informing the customer a OAP shouldn't be expected to travel 25 miles to get a key cut , It's immoral & greed on the part of the locksmith that has fitted it .I'm not complaining as they have lost several contracts because of their actions that I now have , I will suggest & supply a restricted system if appropriate .

Yes I agree but old people 'forget' that is what they asked for -

I keep finding my stuff has been moved

I can smell strange aftershave

Oh yes dear if you think it is for the best

Oh I will never need more than 3 keys

-

-

Of course some installers do this as you say for the repeat business - I would suggest change the cylinder for something you can cut

-

It could of course be a housing policy

or a family member has another key

old people are difficult - I know I am one

The're not all old customers , One particular Locksmith I was giving all my call out work to as I haven't done it for some years .They have created a bad name for themselves just because of this & Trading standards are telling them to replace the locks with a open profile system if the customer complains ,All down to short sighted  greed in my opinion .
