Craig Gardner
We are looking at getting a new mortice machine. Anyone got any views on what is the best one to buy? Danny YOU CANT GO FAR WRONG WITH A SILCA LANCER PLUS NOT THE CHEAPEST MORTICE MACHINE ON THE MARKET BUT IT IS ROBUST AND RELIABLE. THE JAKEY MK2 STILL A GOOD MACHINE THOUGH IF YOU ARE ON A TIGHT BUDGET. GIVE SKS A CALL THEY ARE SURE TO GIVE YOU A GOOD DEAL AND ADVICE. Danny King
I have the silca lancer in mind but have heard this machine can be tricky to use.
Technical Tony original
The silca Lancer is a good machine to use -and in a sense it is tricky at 1st if you have never had one - that said you will get used to it quite quickly, and should give many years of use . The Jakey (RST) MK2 Mortice machine - a design that has not really changed for many years but no need to as it is a simple but efective design. easy to use and again many years of use for your money . Both good machines - best to look at your budget too - as this will also help you make your choice
Andy_Davenport
I agree with john, both great machines, but my money would be on the Lancer. Its a quality bit of kit.

Craig Gardner
I have the silca lancer in mind but have heard this machine can be tricky to use. HI AGAIN I HAVE A LANCER AND A LANCER PLUS AND THE JAKEY MK2 IF YOU CURRENTLY USE A MANCUNA THEN THE JAKEY MK2 WIL BE NO PROBLEM TO USE AS IS BASICALY A MUCH BETTER EQUVILENT TO THE OLD MANCUNA. BUT BUT AFTER CUTTING A FEW KEYS ON A LANCER AND GETTING THE HANG OF THE PUSH LEVER INSTEAD OFF TURNING THE WHEELS YOU WILL WONDER HOW YOU EVER MANAGED WITHOUT IT. THE MAJOR DOWN SIDE TO THE JAKEY MK2 IS BULLET CUTS THESE ARE A PAIN IN THE ARSE ON THAT MACHINE AND IT IS A BIT SLOWER TO CUT KEYS ON. SO IF YOU DO VOLUME YOU DEFINETALY NEED THE LANCER. Danny King
Hi Thanks for all your help, I notice noone has mentioned the Orion Y2k machine is there any reason for this? I am thinking more and more of the Silca lancer Plus
Technical Tony original
The Y2k - I think they are stopping it ... (I think) In general it is an Ok machine for you money - you either like the Y2k or don't . The main problem with it is that it eats up cutters even with the new carbide ones, they do not last as long as the other 2 mentioned machines - this in turn after time can start to become costly ... still we have sold a few of these and the customers have said they do like them .. I am thinking more and more of the Silca lancer Plus 4got to add I look at the Y2k as a little brother to the Lancer Plus - not quite as good - and not quite as popular ! both made by the same end company but the Lancer Plus is the better machine I would say .. kobblers
I agree with john, both great machines, but my money would be on the Lancer. Its a quality bit of kit. except for the crappy thumbturns that break way too easily
Technical Tony original
That is true - But an easy fix here - Just Buy a set of the OLD Lancer Black turns - and almost trouble free
Auto Key Wizard
I agree with john, both great machines, but my money would be on the Lancer. Its a quality bit of kit. except for the crappy thumbturns that break way too easily Thumb turns from the Silca Bravo will fit, are stronger & a lot more comfortable to use. davejones1974
THE JAKEY MK2 is a fine machine. very reliable, great value for money. Give Davenport Burgess a call and get them to send you one.....
Danny King
Hi Didn't get on with the Jakey MK2 felt like it was going to break and I had no confidence in it. I think I'm going togo with the silca lancer
davejones1974
Hi Danny. I`ve only really used the MK2, started using it back in 1990 as a trainee. Used it later on with Mister Minit and got one, for my own shop in Glossop now. But its what you think best, let me know how you get on with the new machine. busy bee
We started off many many years ago with a Mancuna, changed to a Jakey and fairly quickly changed again to a Lancer. We think the Lancer is the best.
