Elastic That Stretches Sideways for Half-Chaps

Recommended Posts

I am looking for the strong elastic used at the back of a pair of half chaps

(leggings or gaiters) to keep them from slipping.

This elastic has a sideways stretch.

It is similar to the elastic used on paddock boot gores. That could be made to work if it is cut the "wrong" way, but it only yields a strip about 12 inches long.

I need strips from 16 to 21 inches.

Research tells me this elastic is a specialty product which is made in Europe, particularly Belgium or France.

Can anyone help out with this?

Thanks, all.

It is made in this country but it is very expencive, I was told a couple of years ago that it took a few hours to make 1 metre.

You would not be able to purchase small quantities so a Wholesaler would have to get involved. Any wholesaler interested please send me a PM and I will try to get my brain working.

I found it at the Equestrian show at the NEC Birmingham, a very worthwhile show if any of you get the chance to go. The best Leathers, the best threads and the best tools and accessories.

Plus an added bonus of young females walking around modelling jodpors and the latest fashions for horse riding. (worth the visit just for that).

Hugh,

I have personally contacted, through e-mail and telephone, 37 makers of elastic fabrics.

Not one of them has what I'm looking for. One of the old time mills in England told me they tried to make a narrow elastic with sideways stretch but it "did not work out".

I have a piece of this elastic sitting in front of me but I'm d****d if I can find out where it was made.

If you can come up with a name or other info I would be forever grateful.

It's past the point of need; it's all about the principle now!

I can get elastic upto (I think off the top of my head) about 16" wide. Infact I bought a load for stock about a year ago then sent it back once the invoice arrived, it was VERY expensive and thought I'd never sell it.

PM me your email addresses if you are interested and I will enquire on Tuesday as to the cost etc.

Thanks

Thanks Paul, didn't really want to do it that way because of elastic fraying, will keep you in mind if I have no other luck.
