Had a really helpful phone call from Mike (?) of u-marq who gave me some good advice on using clearing toolpaths, and put me right on something I had been doing wrong for years. So hopefully I will not have any more issues with the nose cone dropping into the gap.

I suppose it's one of the problems with being mostly self taught on these machines, you don't always realise that there's a better way to do something. But it's nice to know that u-marq are keeping an eye on this thread and will phone to give advice if they think it's needed.

Maybe it was Rick, not Mike. I was feeling very 'off the ball' that day, so almost certainly got it wrong. I'm sure I came across as more than a little dim.

For the last however many years, instead of using the 'clearing toolpath' option I had been using the 'hatch fill' option. Which means, of course, that everything comes up that much wider allowing the nose cone to drop into the gap between the two outside lines. It would probably have helped if I'd thought about measuring the gap between the lines and comparing it to the diameter of the nose cone, as he suggested.

He also suggested not doing the whole sign in one hit if there's issues with bits being missed when engraving without the nose cone, and to do it in sections instead so that I could reset the surface on the lower parts.

Anyway, I have now put a piece of foamex on the flatbed and milled it off to create what should now be a level surface, so hopefully I won't need to resort to using the nose cone so often. Which will save time weeding the vinyl out off the letters afterwards too.

A while ago the latest 'lad' managed to change all the jobs that I had saved in the Vistool program into pdf files. He doesn't know how he did it, or how to change them back, and everything I have saved since becomes a pdf too.

Granted, it doesn't seem to be causing a problem at the moment, but I'd be interested to know how to change them back should I need to.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

If you right click on a job file it should give you a menu, click properties at the bottom.

Next to "opens with" is a change button, search for Vistool, it needs to be a .SDR file.

Make sure the box at the bottom is ticked " Always use the selected program to open this type of file".

Fingers crossed!!

As a Gravograph user not sure if i should post on this but it does sound like he has associated the Job files with Adobe in Windows software.

This might help.

Hi Graham

I worked my way through to the 'Associate defaults to a program' page, but could not recognise anything there that shouted Vistool at me, so I didn't want to mess with anything.

Hi Michael

Here are some screen shots of the various windows I encountered. Can you tell me what I should be clicking on in the last one please.

First I right clicked on a saved job and then on 'Open with'

Attached File  Open with.jpg   114.5KB   0 downloads

Didn't want to use either of the two offered, so browsed for Vistool

Attached File  Browse for Vistool.jpg   80.86KB   0 downloads

Couldn't work out what to do with this one

Attached File  Drop down menu from Vistool 8.jpg   67.73KB   0 downloads

Thanks in anticipation

Ok. I've clicked on .exe and this is the new window. The box for 'always use this program....' was already ticked.

Attached File  So I've clicked on exe.jpg   127.54KB   1 downloads

Now I'm truly confused.

It is, though I'm pretty sure they didn't look like that before. I seem to remember they were blank, rather than having tool boxes on. But if it all works I'm not going to worry anymore.

I was just concerned about the error box, that I may have done something wrong.

Thanks everyone.
